Summary Very little is known about how political life worked in North Africa in the period after the collapse of Roman power and before the Arab conquest. My research looks at the ‘Moorish’ societies which developed in northern Algeria, the mountainous regions of Tunisia and Morocco, and the pre-deserts of Libya. It seeks to examine what made a ‘king’ a ‘king’ and what made a ‘tribe’ a ‘tribe’ in this period, by looking critically at the archaeology, inscriptions and written records available to us. I am seeking funding to support a month-long trip to an outstanding research library in Sydney Australia. This will lead eventually to the publication of a book.
