Summary | We will undertake a broad scale and systematic analysis of pottery from Epipalaeolithic and Neolithic sites In Tunisia and Algeria to assess the chronological spread of Neolithic economies in northern Africa. We will use state of the art biomolecular and stable isotopic analysis of organic residues in prehistoric pottery to identify the commodities processed in the pots (e.g. plant resources, fish, meat and dairy products). Using a new method of compound-specific dating we will also be able to date the very pots themselves, providing high resolution maps for the spread of pottery and domestic animal use in northern Africa. |
