Summary | Recent discoveries in the western Nile Delta at the Neolithic settlement of Merimde Beni Salama and in the surrounding hinterland, are starting to shed new light on the prehistory of the region, in particular the potential for comparative analysis with other regions of North Africa, including the western Desert and Libya. A new project directed by the applicant (Rowland and Tassie 2014) has thus far established that: a) the Neolithic settlement first identified by Junker, is much larger than the excavations throughout the 20th century had led us to believe, b) that the site may be of significance within debates as to the routes of modern human dispersals out of Africa during the Middle Palaeolithic, and c) that research into connections and influences to and from the west needs to be brought to the fore. |
