‘The Forum of Sala: Architectural Evolution of a North African Town Across the Pre-Roman and Roman Eras’ by Dr Rossella Pansini (University of Siena)
This lecture will present the main contents of the recently published book ‘Il Foro di Sala, 3. Edifici e ricostruzioni’ (Rome, Quasar Editions 2023), which is dedicated to the architectural and urban analysis of the ancient town of Sala. This site, currently known as Chellah (Rabat, Morocco), shows traces of pre-Roman, Roman, and medieval-period occupation. The lecture will focus on the pre-Roman and Roman phases of the town, and on the study and 3D reconstruction work that was carried out recently on the buildings in the monumental district. The methodological process behind the work will be described and the case study of the so-called ‘Temple A’, a pre-Roman sacred building that was reused, transformed, and enhanced during the Roman period, will be presented.
